Introduction of Internship

 ※About Internships※

As the labor market is rapidly changing, career paths have become more diverse and flexible. Employability is now an important topic to many countries when developing their youth policies. At Tunghai University, we strive to align our students with industry needs and encourage them to apply themselves in internships.

Off-campus internships are considered part-time work and formal courses at THU. Departments are required to develop internship courses according to the nature of their field and development. In addition, departments should arrange for on-campus instructors and counselors from partnering organizations to provide students with practical guidance, cultivating the core professional employability critical to students in their future job search.

Benefits of Internships for Students

Through internships, students can accelerate their integration into workplace environments under the guidance of internship mentors and company training. They also gain exposure to various aspects of the workplace through assigned tasks, learning and growing from hands-on experiences, with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and potential.

  1. Understand the operations of real-life workplaces and develop the necessary workplace skills, applying what they have learned
  2. Familiarize themselves with workplace dynamics and develop necessary professional ethics
  3. Discover personal interests and talents, which can help guide future career paths and fields
  4. Build professional networks by meeting industry professionals, which can benefit future career plans

Benefits of Internships for Corporations

Unlike regular part-time jobs, internships offer corporations access to outstanding and highly motivated students across all THU colleges through the THU Talent Web. Throughout the internship, companies can assign short-term projects and senior mentors to the interns. This will help companies identify and recruit like-minded and high-potential talents early on. Many renowned global companies offer unique internship programs each year to esteemed institutes of higher education, and many of their interns later become rising leaders. As such, internship programs are an important channel for recruiting strategic talents.

By offering internship programs, companies can potentially reap the following benefits:

  1. Capitalize on outstanding interns to help resolve project-based tasks
  2. Identify outstanding like-minded candidates and develop a strategic recruitment channel by instructing, assessing, and screening interns
  3. Bolster the company's reputation and reduce recruiting costs through positive internship experiences and word-of-mouth
  4. Collaborate with universities to align academic learning with industry needs, maximizing talent potential and creating a win-win cycle between education and employment

Career Personality Aptitude System (CPAS):
Developed by Dr. Tomohachiro Ito of Tokyo University, the CPAS is a simple, fast, and effective tool to diagnose career aptitude and is driven by the idea that "career aptitude equals ability plus personality." In other words, when considering future career plans, everyone should identify their ability (including professional knowledge, experience, and ability) but also, more importantly, whether their personality is "apt" for the position. If everyone is able to identify the best jobs for themselves and develop their potential accordingly, the CPAS believes that everyone can find the best position for them to unleash their potential and create their own successful careers.

University Career and Competency Assessment Network (UCAN):
The UCAN platform helps college students gain a clearer understanding of their career path and develop relevant competencies with greater motivation and purpose. Developed by the Ministry of Education, the UCAN platform integrates career exploration and competency assessment, aligning with industry demands to enhance students’ understanding of workplace trends. Through self-assessment tools, students can improve their career readiness and competitiveness in the job market. The platform currently offers services such as occupational information, career interest assessments, and competency evaluations.

★Important Pre-internship Reminders for Students:

Off-campus internships are an opportunity to enter a real workplace and learn hands-on, gain real-life experience, and develop necessary skills. Workplaces are unlike the structured learning environment of school, and so students are encouraged to mentally prepare for the transition and keep the following points in mind:

  1. Review all internship-related regulations issued by the university or your department.
  2. Understand the contents of the internship agreement, including compensation, working hours, and insurance coverage.
  3. Make sure you know your advisor at school and exchange contact information before the internship begins.
  4. Discuss and develop your personalized internship plan with your advisor, and research relevant information in advance on key topics.
  5. Attend any pre-internship workshops or briefings organized by the school.
  6. Consider the accessibility and safety of the internship location; seek advice early from the school, senior students, or the partner organization regarding housing, rentals, and transportation.
  7. Comply with the partner organization’s onboarding and payroll process, prepare personal documents and open a bank account for salary deposits as needed.
